Under the expert guidance of world renowned engineering practice BuroHappold Engineering, UAE University students, who enrolled under Dubai Carbon’s Carbon Ambassador Programme (CAP), are now a step closer to achieving their goal.

The first step for the students was to finalise the technical designs to create a fully sustainable containerised bus stop using locally sourced tools and renewable energy which included the design drawings for the implementation of their Turnkey Project working closely with BuroHappold. The bus stops will be created out of used 20ft shipping containers supplied by DP World. The structures will be completely functional and self-sustaining, making good use of items that would otherwise be considered waste.

A number of  young sustainability and MEP engineers from BuroHappold are now helping the students understand energy balance, energy efficiency modelling, and helping them to come up with the cooling solutions and MEP drawings for the containers.

For 40 years BuroHappold has been delivering creative, value led building and city solutions for an ever changing world, while bridging the gap between science and society, to forge meaningful and lasting global relationships that benefit all.

”The Carbon Ambassador Programme has had unparalleled support from industry heavy weights, and BuroHappold has really taken this initiative to heart.  Their expertise has helped the students get a step closer to realising their dream and forging innovation,” commented Waleed Salman, Chairman of Dubai Carbon.

“It was key for the students to ensure their initial plans were accurate and achievable and for their ideas to be translated through technical calculations and engineering drawings, as they are the foundation for a practical delivery. We are proud to have provided technical support to facilitate the process and to help guide these talented students, from which the results have been amazing. It’s been a real pleasure working with such forward thinking people and we are now looking forward to seeing the physical outcome” said Dr Rob Cooke, Associate Director for Sustainability, BuroHappold.

The Carbon Ambassador Programme is supported by Dubai Carbon in collaboration with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). This inspirational initiative also has the seal of approval from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Carbon Ambassador Programme, launched by Dubai Carbon, involves university students in voluntary efforts related to sustainable development and green economy. It provides them with training and capacity building necessary to shape leaders of tomorrow.
