UAE university students enrolled under the Carbon Ambassador Programme (CAP) have taken a colossal leap towards successfully transforming used containers into bus stops.
The Carbon Ambassadors have finalized their ‘Bill of Quantities’ along with the design drawings for the implementation of their Turnkey Project.
The Carbon Ambassador Programme, is supported by Dubai Carbon, in collaboration with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). This inspirational initiative also has the seal of approval from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
”At Dubai Carbon, we are undeterred in helping develop future leaders. These university students are showing great promise, and must cultivate their interest further. It is imperative that our youth adopt a green frame of mind, and it is up to us to make this happen, “commented Waleed Salman, Chairman of Dubai Carbon.
The Carbon Ambassador Programme, launched by Dubai Carbon, involves university students in voluntary efforts related to sustainable development and green economy. It provides them with training and capacity building necessary to shape leaders of tomorrow.
Along with the strategic partnership with DP World, the International Humanitarian City, Consolidated Constructions Company, CH2M Hill, and BuroHappold Engineering are some of the more recent partners in this project who have signed MoUs with Dubai Carbon, “For us, this project is not about making bus stops from reused shipping containers, it is about engaging with young people and helping them to inspire others with their passion and inspiration. These are the first steps for inspiring future generations and we are delighted to be a part of that process,” commented Dr Rob Cooke, Associate Director Sustainability.
The bus stops will be created out of used 20ft shipping containers supplied by DP World. These structures would be completely functional and self-sustaining. Thus, putting to good use, and, making the best of waste.
“We all want the planet to continually sustain and support the human race. That would require a change in our attitude, a combination of rational enlightenment and moral awakening. Carbon emissions are a global conundrum, prevalent in the UAE too. The Carbon Ambassadors Programme of Dubai Carbon takes exceptional strides to mitigate the hazard in Dubai and Dubai Plan 2021 is a great opportunity to establish a greener economy for sustainable development. We need to support the project more than ever before as we advocate a change, along with the Carbon Ambassadors, to reduce carbon emissions for a greener and greater Dubai,” said Consolidated Constructions Company, Head of CSR, Mr. MamunniVellaparambil.
Neil Reynolds, Regional Managing Director, CH2M Hill added, “The programme aligns with CH2M Hill’s strategy as a global sustainability leader. We support the concept of “low impact – high output” and are pleased to partner with the CAP, and its members, as they become the future leaders in the exciting but crucial juncture we stand at. Furthermore, we also support Dubai’s strategy to become one of the world’s leading centers for sustainability and the green economy.”
